Inspired by Cells and Spiders

Memory, abandonment, sexuality and distorted reality.  These are themes prevalent in the glorious work of French sculptor Louise Bourgeois, of whom I have long been an admirer.  Then last night my love and I watched the documetary “Louise Bourgeois: The Spider, the Mistress and the Tangerine,” by Marion Cajori and Amei Wallach, and umm, wow!  I had no idea of the breadth and depth of her work and her strength and vulnerability as an artist.

For me, Louise Bourgeois’ work and life is Butoh.  As she said, “An artist can show things that other people are terrified of expressing.”  This evening after teaching my modern class, I began working on a new solo inspired by this incredible woman, embodying her hands, her voice, her tears.  Images of fog, bones, torn fabric, rain…thank you Louise.
