spun

spun. My initial inspiration for this dance was the work of artist Louise Borgeois, and I wrote a bit about this in a past blog post.  Borgeois’ exploration of memory, female sexuality, and personal emotion stirred me, especially her Cells installations and her massive spider sculpture, Maman. That was my starting point, and as the piece developed I researched the archetype of spiders. Themes of illusion, connection, creation and destruction prevailed. What webs do we weave for ourselves? How do we spin our identities? In spun, I unapologetically ask and investigate these questions of both myself and the audience.  It premiered this past September in the 9th annual Asheville Butoh Festival at the BeBe Theatre.
