Seeds in suspension: strange daughters spring synopsis!
Wells are homes of spirits, monsters and virgins. Cracks and minute spaces. Chickens scratching the world into existence. Seeds in suspension. Pigs as symbols of divine fruitfulness as well as gluttony and lust; often sacrificed for Demeter and Persephone. The fluidity and heartbreak of Kitsune. Sexuality, status, seduction and sweet songs. The sacrifice of sure footing in order to go on a dark journey of initiation and travel between dimensions. Violets.
“Forgiveness is the fragrance that the violet sheds on the heel that has crushed it.”
~Mark Twain
At Interlude, co-produced by the Media Arts Project and Black Mountain College Museum + Arts Center, I premiered a new solo in progress, violaceous, at the closing block party. I had been improvising with a variety of inspirations (some of which are listed above), then my dear friend and often artistic collaborator, Moving Women’s Kathy Meyers Leiner, gave me an amazing pair of shoes for my birthday. I knew immediately they would feature in my new work! I am currently developing the solo to become a longer piece that I will perform in the not too distant future. There are a couple of pictures here and on Instagram under #interludeavl.
The 10th Asheville Butoh Festival was awesome! Yumiko Yoshioka’s workshops were wonderful and her sold out performances blew all of our minds. She is such a gift to Butoh! Included here are a few pics of our workshop participants being party-goers then monsters, ha! The local Butoh performers shows also went well, and I was honored to perform my solo concert”strange daughters” again. I made quite a few changes in costuming, timing and some choreography as well, and all seemed to be well received, but there is still more work to do to get the show to be as strong as I would like. Many thanks to Julie Becton-Gillum of Legacy Butoh and Asheville Contemporary Dance Theatre for producing the festival! Thanks everyone for your support and stay tuned for strange daughters butoh’s next performance adventure!
